Field Trip to Lego Exhibit

We took the kids to Topeka to the Lego exhibit for a school fieldtrip.  The artist was able to do some really cool things with lego blocks, however they didn't bring the Han Solo in carbonite, so Lady Killer could only rate it a B+.  :)

Start of Hunting Season 2011

I took Lady Killer and one of his friends out hunting on Friday.  We hunted a conservation field that we've hunted the past 3 years.  So far the first year was the best.  The boy's each shot one dove so in the end it was a successful hunt.

First bird of the season, Bosco is happy!

Lady Killer Farm Video #1

Lady Killer and Dad, working at the farm

Lady Killer and I went to the farm today to do some cleaning around the barn.  We've got a quote for fixing the roof and some structural work that is needed to square it up and replace the header over the front double doors.  The cost of the roof is more than I planned, but if we don't replace it soon, we might as well put a match to the building as it will continue to rot and fall apart.  I'm on board, now I only need to convince Mom.

Lucy's Cousin came for a visit

One of Lucy's favorite cousins came for a visit the first week of August.  We took her out to the farm and she was able to take a few photo's.  Overall everyone had a blast, Shortcake loves the tractor, loves it a little to much and had a couple meltdown's when it was someone elses turn for a ride...

Pulling Stumps

This morning started off with Lady Killer, Master Chief, Girl 2 and Girl 3 (no nicknames for them yet) heading out to the farm.  We get out there and realize I have left the gate key and tractor key at home... So we head back home to get the key and leave everyone but Lady Killer.

Lady Killer and I have a mission of pulling a stump that sits pretty close to the opening of the garage where we park the tractor.  We are armed and ready to go!

I get on the tractor, put it into gear, but the stump wasn't going to give up without a fight.

So we proceed with chopping and digging.... Try the tractor again...

More chopping, more digging, try the tractor, more chopping, more digging, try the tractor....

Bosco is no help

One more time with the tractor...

We own a Tractor

Today we became the proud owners of a 1954 Ford 860 tractor.  We orginally thought we could wait a couple of years to buy a tractor, but the grass grew so tall as to make it hard for the kids to walk, and with the tall grass came lots and lots of ticks.  So we went ahead and bought the tractor, I'm so glad we did.  One of the previous owners put 861 stickers on it, not sure why, maybe they thought it looked better.

Soil Sample Collection

Today being my last day off before I go back to work, I decided to take some of the kids to the farm to gather a soil sample. With corn not yet knee high, it was a good time to get out there and gather up some dirt from about 20 different spots mostly around where we want the orchard to be. The kids did great in the barn and we brought along a broom to let them start cleaning it up a little bit. The barn is in very bad shape, but I do believe it is fixable, though we may name it the money pit because there is a lot of things we could do to work on it.

On June 15th, we close on our land purchase out near Tonganoxie. We've been searching for quite a while and thought we had found our new home out near Smithville, MO, however the deal never was able to get closed since we were dealing with a seller who wasn't that interested in selling.

For now we are starting the process of figuring out where things like the house, orchard, driveway's and other items will be placed on our 16+ acres that we will soon own.
